Arek Appears on Portrait Artist of the Year

It seems that Box-it has a very talented artist in our midst. We are proud to say that Arek Siarkowski recently appeared on SKY Arts’ Portrait Artist of the Year 2018, where he got to paint model, actress and television host, Rachel Hunter, and compete for the acclaimed title.

Arek, who is a Logistics Data Analyst at Box-it, was one of just 72 contestants chosen to appear in the popular series, hosted by Frank Skinner and Joan Bakewell. He was selected from some 1500 entries and appeared in episode 4 aired on 6th February 2018, which can be viewed on SKY on Demand or Now TV.

As part of his entry, Arek had to initially paint a self-portrait, which he says took about three weeks to complete. The 1500 entries were then whittled down to just 72, and of course that was when Arek received a phone call from the producer telling him that he had been selected to appear on the programme.

Arek had to initially submit a self-portrait to enter the competition

“I was absolutely thrilled,” says Arek. “I then had a few interviews over the phone, and I had to explain my working methods and give the producers some background about my life history – so it was quite a lengthy process, but one that has been so interesting and rewarding.”

The programme was recorded at The Wallace Collection in London. The format for the series involves contestants being allocated ‘a model’ to paint; and as we know, it was the famous Rachel Hunter who sat for Arek’s group. Each contestant has just four hours to create their portrait. If that’s not pressure enough, they are filmed (and interviewed) whilst doing it.

“It was a fantastic atmosphere and very interesting to go behind the scenes of the show, which has a crew of about 90 people. While it is a competition, everyone is very friendly and we all helped each other in sharing art materials. Rachel Hunter was a great sitter and she gave up a lot of time to talk to all the artists. It is by far, my biggest and best achievement and an experience I will never forget,” says Arek.

Arek’s colleagues from Box-it watched the programme with pride and were full of praise for his artistic talent and achievements. On behalf of all at Box-it, congratulations on your success Arek.
